Still Life in Pastel
Karen Sewell
Thursdays, April 3 – 17, 6pm – 9pm

Students will learn how to “see” and translate the feeling of a still life subject. Work with the concept that this is just a piece of paper – it’s OK to not get it right all the time. Students will learn how to change course, correct, or just begin again. There will be discussion of pastel properties, papers, framing, and different pastel techniques and styles. For beginner to intermediate students.

Monotype Printing

Saturday and Sunday, April 12 - 13, 9am – 4:30pm

Most print making processes require costly equipment and chemicals. We will be using water based paints and household items to transfer images. We will also work with some botanical prints and explore positive and negative images. Some drawing or design skills are required. Materials fee is $15.00. Extra paper will be available for purchase. Bring your favorite small brushes and a rolling pin if you have one. Sudents are encouraged to bring pictures or drawings as inspiration of things to paint on to your plates.

Introduction to Photography

Tuesdays, May 6 – 27, 4 – 6pm

This course will help participants improve their ability to see interesting images and to capture them in photographs. The course will not emphasize the technical aspects of photography, although help will be available as desired. The course will include hands-on exercises during class as well as outside assignments between class sessions. Some basic instruction will be provided in making digital prints from a computer, including ways to improve the images.

This class will be an opportunity to draw realistic and whimsical images with the artist. Brad will share techniques he has discovered and developed in his own drawings.

This course is for those artists who have attained a strong skill level and want to pursue work in the illustration market. We will work on individual pieces and your portfolio as a whole. Students will also study professionals and learn about marketing their illustrations.

Pen and Ink Drawing

This course will cover how to work with pen and ink. Discussions and demonstrations will include composition, how to put depth into a drawing and working with light directions, shadows, foreground and contrast. Students will also learn about using the proper paper, pen tips, and ink. Instruction will be centered on country and mountain landscapes, featuring old barns and homesteads.

Intro to Oil Painting

For beginners who want to learn how to create an oil painting, and for intermediates who wish to improve their paint handling skills, this class will explore the many techniques that will enable you to get the results you want. Working indoors from still life set-ups, this class will cover materials, supports, how to begin a painting, color mixing, value, and techniques such as glazing and scumbling. We will experiment with both direct (alla prima) and indirect painting methods, and much more. No experience is necessary.

Painting Composition: Acrylic

This class will focus on learning some techniques in acrylic painting such as mixing, tinting, shading blending and using texture. Students will also learn about color theory, contrast, and analogous and monochromatic color schemes. With these skills, students will learn how to fill a background and apply a variety of subject matters ranging from abstract to natural objects, still life and other inspirational subjects. Students will be encouraged to be expressive and intuitive. This class is for beginners and the experienced.

Splash! It’s Wet and Wonderful

This three day workshop is planned to excite participants to go beyond documentation of any subject to create innovative and unique paintings in water media. Jump In! The Water’s Fine!

Designed as a continuation of the weekend class entitled “Splash – It’s Wet and Wonderful,” we will do new and further explorations into making marks on paper. Students will use anything water soluble but transparent watercolor as a base. Class will include individual assessments and critiques when paintings are completed. The Art of Teaching Art to Children

Instruction includes basic drawing, painting, sculpture, collage and mixed media techniques with a hands on opportunity to learn new skills. Students will become familiar with elements of design, art supplies, methods and terminology of teaching art to children. Instruction will be on presenting these skills to all age levels. Sound drawing is the basis for nearly all visual art. This class is designed to help beginning and intermediate students improve their drawing skills. In turn, it should help them become more competent in other media. We will draw still lifes and outdoor scenes, weather permitting. Students will use a variety of media techniques.

Relief Printing

In this course students will learn how to design and carve a linoleum block, how to ink the block and print the design. You will create both a black and white, and a multiple color plate print. Students will design and print their own greeting card, bookmark or work of art. The creative possibilities are up to you! No experience necessary but please be aware that sharp carving tools will be used.

Experimental Acrylics

This workshop is designed to open the door for exploration and creativity in acrylics. Students will be encouraged to push beyond a set way of thinking and to discover new techniques. Part of each morning will be used for demonstrations and discussions. Each student will learn to expand his or her way of seeing and jump-starting creative juices.

This course is designed for serious photographers wanting to capture with their own cameras nature’s beauty that surrounds us. This course covers the basics including finding the best light, proper exposure and composition. Helpful equipment and techniques will be discussed. Field sessions will encompass various aspects such as close-ups, landscape, waterways and more. Students provide their own equipment, including cameras, lenses and tripods.

Plein Air: Oil Painting

Discover why the Masters worked outdoors. Experience the magic of working directly from nature in real light. Come and see how working plein air will improve your artwork in a multitude of ways. This workshop will begin with a demonstration and discussion of necessary materials for plein air work from 12noon – 2pm. Class will then be moved outdoors for everyone to have the opportunity to experience plein air first hand. All materials and all levels welcome.

Oil Landscape

Learn to translate what the artist “sees” and “feels” for a subject in a lively and vibrantly colorful way that oil paints can deliver. The instructor will emphasize a basic understanding of the principals of perspective, lighting, composition, color and value. This class will demonstrate ways to expand the creative use of oils with mediums and tools. Beginners to intermediate are welcome.
