Take your talents outside and learn and practice using charcoal to draw the world around you. In this plein air (“in the open”) drawing class, students will micro and macro-scapes out-of-doors. Erin will assist students in focusing on line, shadow, depth and shape in the unique circumstances created by working outside.
Students should bring an easel, charcoal, and charcoal drawing paper.

Afternoon Art at the Jax
Ongoing Weekly Art Opportunity for Kids
Thursdays, 4-5pm, starting July 29
Ages 4-8
A new program of ongoing weekly creative opportunities for kids is starting at the Jax.
Kicking off with Lore Deighan, kids will work on 2-dimensional summer art! From texturizing with plant matter, to pressing, rubbing, sketching and more!
Kids ages 4 to 8 are invited to experience an array of arts and crafts for only
- $10 per class when registering in advance ($5 for 2nd sibling).
- Walk-ins or same-day registrations are welcome and will pay only $12 per class ($6 for 2nd sibling).
- a 4-week preregistration can be purchased for only $35 ($50 for 2 siblings, and 50% off for each subsequent sibling).
Parent participation is welcome, but not required.
Second-child discounts apply to siblings and children living under the protection of the same guardian only.
If you would like to register more than one child, please do so by phone or in-person at the center. Our online registration is not currently capable of handling such registrations.
Single child registrations are accepted online. Please include child's name as Student #1 and the date(s) of the Thursdays you are registering for as the "Class Code".
Walk-ins please call the center before class to make sure that we are holding class that day--advance notice will be given for Thursdays that will not be scheduled.

Intermediate Wire Wrapping (JWL092610)

Once you’ve mastered the fundamental techniques in Kitty’s bracelet-oriented wire-wrapping class, you will be ready to create gorgeous gemstone pendants using techniques designed to securely and beautifully all your precious pieces. Using 14kt gold fill or sterling silver wire and semi-precious stones of your choosing, you will learn how to make a sturdy pendant with creative embellishments.

Minimum Age: Responsible Young Adult
Class size limited to 4 students.
Class entails detail work--students should bring glasses if they need them.

Wrap it, bend it, twist it, turn it! Let Kitty teach you the fundamentals of wire-wrapped jewelry while making a beautiful bracelet for yourself or a loved one! Using 14kt gold fill or sterling silver wire and semi-precious stones of your choosing, you will learn how to make a sturdy bracelet with hook clasp and creative embellishments.

Play with fire and get rewarded! Create beautiful glass beads using the flamework torch and rods of different colored glass. Students in this class will learn about the equipment and safety precautions necessary to safely work soft glass into a variety of unique beads. From choosing beautiful color combinations, to swirling and texturing, students will walk away with a number of glass beads ready to be used in their next jewelry project or gifted to a friend!
Completion of this class will qualify students to rent the center's glass studio on an individual basis.

Fundamentals at the Forge (BLK100910)

This beginning blacksmithing class will introduce students to the equipment, tools and safety precautions involved in the use of the blacksmith’s forge. Once familiar with the tools of the trade, the class will practice fundamental blacksmithing techniques while learning to make basic hooks, tools and decorative flares. Students will leave with all the basic skills necessary to fire up a forge on their own and will be qualified to rent the center’s forge for personal use.
Students are asked to bring their own safety glasses. Aprons and gloves are optional.
