Understanding the properties of colors, how to mix colors, how colors affect one another and how to manipulate the colors to get the “feel” an artist is searching for in a painting will be the main focus of this class.  There are many things that affect how colors are perceived in our work such as light, neighboring colors, value and intensity to name a few.  I will explain the different ways colors are affected and show ways that the artist can gain control of the mood of the painting.  During this class we will use oils and/or acrylics (student’s individual preference) in order to learn how to mix colors on the palette and how to avoid the dreaded “mud”.  Over the course of the class several small painting sketches will be completed by the students to demonstrate different color schemes.

Basically she works in oils and pastels, but loves to work in and incorporate other mediums to achieve the desired effect. Karen has work in collections in Europe and across the US and she has won numerous awards over the years. After living all along the east coast as a naval wife, she became involved in different art groups that fueled her creativity. She is glad to be back home in Floyd County.
