Introduction to Color Theory (BIZ061112)

Ever wondered what a color wheel is good for? Need help getting over your fear of color? Learn the fundamentals of color theory through an exploration of the color wheel and the laws that govern striking color combinations. Carolyn will also guide students through color scheme analysis of famous paintings.

In this in-depth exploration of practical color applications, students will learn about the color wheel, color harmonies, and the psychological/emotional values of color.

Hands-on exercises with paint and brushes, and cut and paste with colored papers, will lead you to discover your own personal color style. Students can bring their own artistic media, projects, and color dilemmas to work on during this class.

Prerequisite for Advanced Color Theory classes.

Minimum enrollment: 3, Maximum enrollment: 8
Beginner ● Materials Fee: $5 ● Minimum Age: 18

Carolyn Deck holds a BFA from the School of Painting at Virginia Commonwealth University, and an MA from the School of Painting at the Royal College of Art in London. Her work is currently represented by The Jacksonville Center and the James Ratliffe Gallery in Sedona, Arizona. Advanced SoulCollage(R) (TWD072112)

In addition to making cards to add to your SoulCollage(R) deck, we will learn about the four suits used in SoulCollage(R) and experience ways to read the cards for daily conversations with our inner selves, meditation, and journaling. Most materials will be provided by the instructor; participants will need to bring a bound, blank notebook (lined or unlined). Discover your wisdom; change your world.

Either of the “Introduction to SoulCollage(R)” or “Honoring our Ancestors with SoulCollage(R)” classes are prerequisite (not both).

Through a simple process of cutting and pasting images from various sources, you create a unique deck of cards that will help you access your inner wisdom, quiet your thinking mind, and allow your intuition and the work of the Spirit to have a voice. This introductory overview of all seven principles of design—unity and variety, repetition and rhythm, balance, contrast, scale and proportion, directional forces, and emphasis and subordination—will assist students of any media gain a deeper understanding of the power of these principles. The class will introduce each principle with examples from crafts, architecture, painting, etc. though the practice and focus will be on 2-dimensional applications. Throughout the course, Carolyn will ask students the question: what is beauty and why do humans respond to it?

This class is the prerequisite to “Intermediate Principles of Design”.

Intermediate Principles of Design (OnDemand)

Through discussion and hands-on activities, participants in this workshop will explore the 7 principles of exceptional design while engaging directly with their own and other students’ work. While this class focuses on 2-dimensional art, understanding the principles of design will assist students of any media gain a deeper understanding of the power of these principles. Each session will be guided by student interest with a focus on one of the 7 principles (informed by the other principles) and how it can be applied across artistic media; its relationship to human psychology and spirituality; and its purpose in the symbolic language of design.
