Education Kick-Off Reception & Instructor’s Exhibit at The Jacksonville Center

On Saturday, April 14 from 4-6pm, The Jacksonville Center will host the 8th Annual Education Kick-off and Instructor’s Exhibit Reception, which highlights The Jax 2012 class schedule and features a selection of art by some of the center’s instructors, including Ed Gowen, Gretchen St. Lawrence, Jean Poythress Koon, Karen Sewell, Sharon Hall and more.

Activities during the reception will include demonstrations from local art instructors such as blacksmith John Riddle and ceramics artist Sidra Kaluszka. Glenda George will demonstrate her felted soaps course and give attendees a chance to try it out for themselves. There will also be kids’ activities with Afternoon Arts teacher, Sarah Greene and assistant Rebekah Bordeaux and a talk/demonstration from Japanese Woodworker and Jax instructor, Yann Giguere. Yann will give a one hour talk/demonstration from 4-5pm introducing his love of the art and the goal of the classes he will be teaching in June. Yann is owner and founder of Mokuchi Woodworking and will be teaching a 4-day series of classes on knife sharpening, planing, and small stool making. Registrations for classes made during the event will receive a 10% discount on class tuition.

“I’m really excited about this year’s reception. We have some great demonstrations and activities planned and, of course, great people leading them. I hope we can give people a taste of how fun it can be to participate in our educational programming here at The Jax,” said Amy Avery-Grubel, Director of Educational Programming. The community is encouraged to attend.  The exhibit and the reception are free and open to the public.

For more information about these exhibits and more, visit www.jacksonvillecenter.com, email info@jacksonvillecenter.com or call (540) 745-2784.

Volunteers Needed for Work Day @ the Jax

It is that time of year when yards beg to be prettied up for the fall…..at least our yard at the Jacksonville Center could use some sprucing up prior to our two big concerts in September.  Come join us at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, August 27.  Bring your spouse, a friend, a child or anyone willing to lend a hand. We would love to have students pitching in.

We will need rakes, wheel barrows, shovels, weed  eaters, drop cloths (to use to carry trash).  Please bring gloves and you might want to wear long sleeved shirts and pants because there is some poison ivy in the area.   Bring your own lunch and plan to stay the day.

Charidy will be leading the pack on this work day and has done a darn good job along with Charles and Tess to  cut the brush and get it  out of the way.  This opportunity requires no out lay of cash but just some hard work from some eager volunteers.  Please let me know by email or phone 593-3081 if you will be able to help.

Thanks to all of you,

Gloria Hilton

Volunteer Coordinator

Donations and Volunteers Needed for Jax BarnYard Sale

Donations for The Jacksonville Center’s Memorial Day Weekend BarnYard Sale are already starting to trickle in and the pickings look good: a riding lawnmower, camping gear, wicker furniture, costume jewelry, baby clothes and essentials, and small household appliances.  However, we’re still seeking any unwanted treasures you may have lurking in your basements, attics, cupboards, and sheds.  This is not an old-fashioned yard sale: you can simply drop off your items for the center’s staff and volunteers to sell!

The first $100 of proceeds from the rummage sale will support the Cher Sweeney Scholarship Fund and additional proceeds will offset the Center’s general operations expenses.  All items not sold on the day will then be donated to Angels in the Attic.  For more information or to donate items for sale, please contact educationinfo@jacksonvillecenter.org or call the center at 540-745-2784.

We’re also looking for volunteers to help with the sale on Saturday, May 28 from 8am – 5pm.  To volunteer, please contact Gloria Hilton at gjhilton1@yahoo.com.
