Sarah McCarthy
Sarah is drawn to functional ceramics because of its usefulness, combined with its ability to enhance the beauty of a given moment, whether in food presentation or drinking a cup of tea. She is always evolving her technical knowledge with a ‘beginner’s mind,’ a spontaneous state of being with endless possibilities.
She is driven in the studio by experimentation and the quest for a simple, elegant form. Her pots are mostly wheelthown and altered with surface decoration. She is fascinated with how glazes complement the surface design. Her pots are high fired in a gas kiln.
Sarah lives in Floyd, VA and has a studio herein the Jacksonville Center for the Arts. She is a self-taught potter who gained her foundation in ceramics from Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. When she is not making pots, Sarah is usually found outside in her garden, hiking, playing with her daughter, Satya, or being in the wonder of a quiet moment drinking tea.
