Fall Concert Series
Although the summer sun continues to shine, fall is right around the corner and with it comes our Benefit Fall Concert Series, “Music for Autumn Evenings” scheduled for Friday, September 16th and Saturday, September 24th.
The concert on September 16th will feature Scott Williamson, Tenor and Artistic Director of Opera Roanoke, Amy Colfield, soprano, and Timothy Gaylard, pianist, presenting “Love at First Duet”, songs from Broadway and arias from La Boheme, Tosca, and La Traviata.
The concert on September 24th will feature David Stewart Wiley, Music Director & Conductor of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra and Akemi Takayama, violinist and Concertmaster of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra presenting a “European and American Musical Travelogue”. Both concerts will begin at 7:30 PM and will take place in the Community Room.
Two wonderful concerts await you – Subscribe to both. A “Meet the Artists” Champagne and Wine Reception will follow each concert.
Advance tickets are $45.00 per series per person and $25.00 per concert per person and can be purchased at the Jacksonville Center, by calling (540) 745-2784, online via Paypal or by contacting Linda Fallon at (540) 745-4317. Tickets purchased at the door are $30.00 per concert per person.
Meet the Artists
Akemi Takayama
Violinlist
Celebrated violinist, Akemi Takayama has served as the concertmaster of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra since 2004. Ms. Takayama appears regularly as soloist and concertmaster of the RSO, and Williamsburg Symphonia as well as an active chamber musician and associate professor at the Shenandoah University Conservatory of Music where she holds the Victor Brown Endowed Chair. Ms Takayama is currently in her fourteenth year as violinist for the internationally renowned Audubon Quartet, and tours regionally and nationally with the group.
She has performed throughout Japan, France, and the U.S. including appearances with the Shinsei-Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Toho School of Music Orchestra, and on a “FM Recital”
broadcast throughout Japan on NHK Radio. She also has performed with the Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra, the Yomiuri Philharmonic Orchestra, Music at Gretna, and with the New World Symphony Orchestra. Her solo performances in the U.S. have included radio and TV appearances in the greater Cleveland area and the Cleveland Institute of Music Symphony Orchestra, the Grand Junction Orchestra, and the University of Wyoming Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra.
Akemi Takayama received first prize in both the Northwest Regional Music Teacher National Association and the Grand Junction Young Artist competitions. She has performed at and served on the faculties of the Chautauqua Institute in NY, the Idyllwild School of the Arts in CA, the Brevard Music Center in NC, Shenandoah Performs in Virginia and at Virginia Tech.
David Stewart Wiley
Solo Pianist
David Stewart Wiley serves concurrently as Music Director & Conductor of our Roanoke Symphony Orchestra and New York’s Long Island Philharmonic. Prior to these positions, he served as Assistant Conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra and before that, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. In demand as a guest conductor, solo pianist, pops arranger, and film composer, Maestro Wiley has performed all over the world including numerous countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa performing close to 100 concerts each season. He has led top American orchestras including the symphonies of Atlanta, Boston, Cincinnati, Honolulu, Indianapolis, Minnesota, Oregon, Saint Louis, San Francisco, and Utah. David Stewart Wiley is the recipient of the Aspen Conducting Prize, a Conducting Fellowship at Tanglewood, the Daniels Prize in Music & Literature from Tufts University, NAACP’s Citizen of the Year Award, and Virginia’s Perry F. Kendig Award for Service to the Arts. Maestro Wiley holds four degrees: Doctor and Master of Music degrees in Conducting from Indiana University, a degree in piano performance with honors from the New England Conservatory, and a degree in Religion, summa cum laude, from Tufts University.
As a solo pianist, David Stewart Wiley has performed with numerous major orchestras throughout the US and has appeared as a jazz pianist in Boston’s Symphony Hall and in recital appearances throughout the US as well as in China, Russia, Romania, Germany Italy and Bulgaria.
